Cloud Nine Guitar Building Courses
Are conducted in our work shop in Port Douglas,Tropical North Queensland and last four weeks.
Students construct their guitar from flat timbers (no kit parts) and photograph/document the process
along the way right up to the final finish of their instrument.
A normal day starts at 8.00 am and finishes at 5.00 pm (Mon--Fri), and if necessary we work Saturdays to
keep schedule. The course at Cloud Nine is a " full on " immersion in Guitarmaking and students will also see
and learn numerous and varied repair work which comes in and out of the shop during the course.
The total cost for all instruction, use of tools, plus materials to construct your own Hand Built Acoustic
Guitar is $4,400.00 AUS. (Maximum 3 students per course).
(N.B. Guitar case is not included in the course price).
Materials Used (depending on availability at time of course)
Guitar Top - AAA Sitka Spruce
Back and Sides - AAA Figured Maple Silkwood, QLD Maple or Local Raintree
Neck - AAA Maple or Mahogany
Bindings - Solid Timbers
Bridge & Fingerboard - Rosewood, Gidgee or Ebony
Machine Heads - Gotoh
Truss Rod - Gotoh
Strings - D'addario EXP 12 gauge or equivalent
Students are taught basic inlay techniques and encouraged to design a 12th fret inlay to create a unique look
for their guitar. Past students have all constructed top quality guitars and 95% had no prior woodworking experience,
some of whom have gone on to set up their own guitarmaking shops!
All accommodation, travel and food costs are at the students expense, however we will happily assist with information
to make arrangements easy for students. For example we can sometimes have access to homestays where students
stay with a local family for their course duration.
Port Douglas is a world class destination often visited by world leaders, movie stars etc. but has retained its laid back
atmosphere! The closest town to the Great Barrier Reef and world heritage rainforest and many other must do
attractions.
This can make your visit really special,and students who come with a partner or friend can relax in the knowledge
they will have plenty of activites available. |
